Pitching Staff Remains Dominant: Marlins Win 3-0

Pavano Threw 7 Shutout Innings

On Thursday, the Marlins completed the three game sweep of the Montreal Expos on the strength of a brilliant performance by Carl Pavano and another power display by 1B Hee Seop Choi

Going into Thursday's afternoon action against the Montreal Expos, the Florida Marlins pitching staff had not allowed an earned run in 32 innings. Carl Pavano, Chad Fox, and Armando Benitez made it 41 after combining for a shutout over the Montreal Expos which completed not only a series sweep but also a series shutout of the Spos in which the Marlins did not allow a single run in the three games.

Pavano went 7 innings giving up only 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out 3. Chad Fox pitched the 8th striking out the side while allowing only 1 walk. Closer Armando Benitez pitched the ninth and earned his league leading 6th save of the season.

The Marlins were led offensively by 1B Hee Seop Choi who hit his 5th homerun of the season with a 2 run shot in the 4th inning of of Montreal starter Zach Day which scored RF Miguel Cabrera. Cabrera also went 2-4 on the day with two hard hit outs. 3B Mike Lowell provided the third Marlin run with a sacrafic fly that scored 2B Luis Castillo. Lowell went 1-3 on the day.

Next up for the Marlins is a three game set in Atlanta against the 2003 National League East Champion Braves. The Braves are currently 4-4 with their Thursday game against the New York Mets still to be played. Game 1 of the series is set for a 7:35 start time. Scheduled to pitch for the Marlins is Darren Oliver who is 1-0 on the season with 2.57 ERA. For the Braves, Russ Ortiz will take the hill. Ortiz is 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA so far this season.
