2003 National League Rookie of the Year Dontrelle Willis who is seeking to prove that his dominant first half success from last year was not a fluke began his 2004 season with a major statement by turning in a brilliant performance against the Expos on Thrusday night.
Willis threw 7 2/3 innings of shutout ball, giving up only 5 hits and 1 walk while striking out 8. The D-Train also continued his impressive performance with the bat as he went 3-3 with a run scored on an exciting head first slide on a play at the plate off of a single by 2B Luis Castillo.
3B Mike Lowell hit his first homerun of the 2004 season with a leadoff homerun to left field in the 2nd inning. Miguel Cabrera added the third run of the game with an RBI single in the 5th that scored Luis Castillo. Cabrera went 2-4 on the day.
Other offensive stars for the game were catcher Mike Redmond who filled in for a slumping Ramon Castro and went 2-4. Mike Lowell went 2-3 with the solo homerun.
Armando Benitez finished off the game with a perfect 9th inning performance striking out Juan Rivera to end the game.
The win concludes the three game set with the Expos with the Fish taking two of the three games.
